Indigo and coffee were the bases for El Salvador´s growth and development, at least for the elite. Until a century ago, indigo – by the Spaniards called the blue gold – was the primary export-product of El Salvador. The blue colour of jeans comes from indigo – from El Salvador.
The production of indigo stopped with the introduction of synthetic indigo. 20 years ago, however, an attempt was made to revitalize the production. But it has been difficult – indigo is still produced by the means of very artesanal methods and they say it¨´ s the only way.
These pictures are from Hacienda Los Nacimientos. Here the indigo is grown organically and apparently there is some demand for it – some of the blue gold is sold to Levi´s – the circle is closed:).
